Mila Kunis doesn’t really want to be famous. But with three movies in the works and a starring role on That ’70s Show, it looks like the beauty has no choice.
Whether she’s playing the dim-witted Jackie on That ’70s Show or voicing the nerdy Meg Griffin on Family Guy, Mila Kunis has been entertaining us for nearly a decade now, spicing up the TV screen with a brand of spunkiness that’s all her own.
STUFF: You were born in Ukraine. It must have been a serious case of culture shock when you moved to Los Angeles.
MILA: I was seven, so it was hard. I didn’t know the language, and I’d never seen anyone of any other ethnicity, because I grew up in a really small town. I had never been to the airport, never had soda, never had a hamburger. It was all a little bit twilight zone.
And before you knew it, you were doing commercials.
The first one I got was a Barbie commercial. It just kind of fell into my lap. I took acting classes when I was a kid to occupy me when my parents were at work.
And you haven’t stopped acting since.
That’s right. And thank God, because I don’t have a clue of what else I’d do. I’m fucked if I don’t make it!
You must have some other skills.
Yes, but I love what I do. I think what draws me to it is the freedom. I mean, most people rebel when they’re teenagers, but I got to do that with a character. I still rebelled, but not as much as most teenagers. My biggest rebellion was that I got my ears pierced at age 18.
How did you avoid becoming another child star gone wrong?
The good thing is, I never was a child star. I’d just work for a few days on a commercial and then go home. My parents never forced me into anything. And now, I mean, I’m not Brad Pitt. I can walk down the street and everything’s cool.
Do you want that kind of fame?
I don’t need that. I like the acting, but I don’t want to be famous. I like my life, and I like my nine to five, and I like when people appreciate my work, but it’s a fine line between appreciation and stalking.
